Norbert "Whiz" Bache, an automobile engineer, always wanted to make his avocation (rugby) his full time vocation. So, when the
chance came to form a team, he pounced on it. With the help of his former college club, he had the nucleus of his side.
His love of automobiles gave the club a name, but since Zephyr was already taken, he rearranged the same letters to mean the same,
which implies speed, power and precision. And that's what the Xephs are, quick, strong and precise.
In their first season in the league, the Xephs posted some interesting wins.
They beat Section winner, the Illinois Hunkrs, in a pouring rain on some nifty running by fly-half Jason "Skeet" Bayfield,
who ran for scores of 62 and 73 yards, leaving the opposition slipping and sliding, trying to catch him.
The rest of their season was not so glamorous, however. Precision passing takes a lot of practice for players to adjust
to each other. After the win over the Hunkrs, the Xephs lost their next 5 games by close scores. They then won 4 of the
last 8 games, to finish the season 5-10.
"Skeet" scored an impressive 13 tries to lead the league in scoring.
