Benjamin "Load" Ellwood, a Canadian player of some note in his day, heard about the Rugby Club Football league from Norbert "Whiz" Bache,
a client of his. He couldn't pass up the opportunity to be a part of it.
His first recruit was a six-time capped Scotsman named Angus "Kilts" McKenzie. "Kilts" can play almost every position on the field but excels
at fly-half. His favorite play is to run directly at an opposition back. As they close quickly, he will execute a "squib" kick off of either knee,
at a full run, popping the ball over the head of his opponent. Then, without breaking stride, he will burst past his man, catching the ball for an open
run up the pitch with only one man to beat.
"Kilts" used this trick three times against his opposite on the Minnesota Crimns, scoring twice and setting up a third.
In the game against the Guloots, he played fly-half, scrum-half and hooker.
"Ophns" comes from the company that sponsored the team in its first season, Ophnmier Ltd. No shame in that.
The Ontario Ophns finished with a 2-13 record, winning decisively when they won and losing close when they lost.
