This club came together in 1996 after sports writer, Edward "Boots" Cheltenham, who was a capped player from England, decided to assemble
a select side of New York's finest to play rugby against other similar teams. And a formidable side it came to be.
He selected large bodies who knew the game and had the speed to run out of a jam.
Naming the team was not so easy, until one night, after a lengthy practice, the team gathered at a local pub for a few brews.
During the camaraderie, one of the players (no one remembers who), got up on a chair to propose a toast to "Boots" and said those memorable
words "Let's give him a twenty-one-son guloot". So much for modern history.
The Guloot attack is led by lock Neil "Damn Sam" Samualson, a rare computer nerd who was also blessed (or cursed) with a body like a fire
hydrant. In close play with the pack, he's the first to the ball, knocking friend or foe off of it until he has control. Many a scrum-half
has said, after playing against him, that they felt they had been beat-up with a chain. Every muscle was bruised.
The New York Guloots finished the 2004 season, emerging for the first time, as the Eastern Section Champions, winning seven close
matches with brute force in the final minutes. They had an 11-4 record.
