Three military lads, Captain James "Hands" Fralich, Lieutenant Carl "Craps" Hinz and Sergeant Robert "Mouth" Goins assembled
a side for a pick-up game against a local rugby club in 1995. They won easily.
The name "Fragonz" is an acronym, written on a pub napkin after that game, using parts of their three last names.
The next year they assembled again to play against better clubs. Because of this schedule, the Virginia Fragonz have been able to attract the best
players in the capital area. Among them is prop Hans "Gutsy" Gustafson, who calls all the plays for the scrum. At 6'5" and 256 pounds, he is a
very intimidating opponent.
His best plays come during line-outs, when he moves with stealth speed to clean-up a bad play on the ball. His sure hands and quick feet set-up
the backs for a sweeping movement down the field.
In any scrum near the opponents goal line, he will curl his shoulder under, forcing the opponents outside head to pop free, giving them no
leverage. "Gutsy" can then wheel the scrum with the ball inside, towards the goal line so one of his mates can drop on it for an easy score.
The Fragonz scored seven tries, as a result this maneuver, this past season. The Fragonz had a 6-9 record, to finish third in the Eastern Section.
