In the spring of 1996, a group of former players from the Bay Area met to form a team to compete in the Rugby Club Football league. Led by Jason
"Sneak" Smith III, a fleet footed back in his day, the group had little trouble finding players who wanted to compete at the next level of rugby.
One of the surprises for the Araghas, the past two seasons, has been the play of hooker Jonah "Grunt" Wahou. This short, stocky Samoan, with
a large upper torso and short skinny legs, would not appear to be a threat. In the scrum, however, he strikes across at his opposite with
intense speed, capturing the ball for his team. But, it has been his play during a line-out when he is the most dangerous.
He loves to burst down the sideline on the short side of the field. You would think that a simple nudge could bump him out
of bounds, but with his superior upper body strength, most tacklers get merely a kind of grunt from him as they bounce off while he continues his
run down field. It was that grunting sound that gave the Araghas their team name.
The California Araghas finished the 2004 season with an 10-5 record.
